Come meet our friend JEN CORN who is running for Berkeley School Board!
Experienced Educator & BUSD Parent
Jen is a lifelong educator with deep connections to Berkeley public schools. She spent thirteen years working in BUSD as a Teacher (at Sylvia Mendez and Rosa Parks) and Principal (at Oxford and Thousand Oaks). In addition, her two children have attended Malcolm X, Willard, Longfellow, and Berkeley High, and her wife Sarah Cline is the co-director of the renowned Berkeley High Jazz Program. She currently works in Oakland Unified as Director of School Improvement. She is a bilingual educator, fluent in Spanish, with a fierce commitment to ensuring that all students are both challenged and supported in our public schools.
Collaborative and Principled Leader
As a school and district administrator, Jen has demonstrated her ability to listen to diverse stakeholders and build consensus, while always prioritizing student learning and well-being. She is a creative problem-solver who looks for ways to bring people together across differences.
Track Record
As a BUSD principal, Jen improved student achievement by implementing targeted supports for English Learners, emphasizing early intervention in reading, and providing teachers with the training and support needed to implement a new math curriculum. She created a relationship-rich school environment in which students felt safe and cared-for, and families felt welcome.
Priorities
- Addressing persistent equity gaps by accelerating the academic achievement of students of color, students with IEPs, and English Learner students;
- Ensuring that Berkeley schools are anti-racist, inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming communities that truly partner with families to serve all students; and
- Recruiting and retaining high quality teachers and staff while guaranteeing a balanced budget.
